This October we will be opening a new state-of-the-art 12-bed CVICU unit. This new department will be staffed by pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, pediatric intensivists, cardiac clinical nurse practitioners, pediatric ICU nurses, respiratory therapists, dieticians and case managers all with specialized cardiac training and experience to ensure optimal outcomes for each patient. The CHOC Heart Institute provides state of the art diagnosis and treatment for an entire spectrum of cardiac conditions from the neonatal to the adolescent patient. The CHOC Heart Institute provides comprehensive cardiac care including complete cardio diagnostics, cardiac catheterization and cardiac surgical services. We are the only regional facility to perform neonatal and pediatric open heart surgery.

The unit also features a satellite pharmacy so medications can be more quickly dispensed, and an onsite blood-gas lab for respiratory therapy. Rooms for on-call physicians are also located on the unit.

The CVICU is a 12-room designated area adjacent to the PICU. It includes two fully-equipped procedure rooms that enable physicians to perform life-saving surgery on children who otherwise could not be transported out of the unit. All of the CVICU rooms are outfitted with leading-edge technology equal to the demands of monitoring children after complex operations.

The sixth floor family zone, sponsored by the Ronald McDonald House, includes a bright, airy waiting area with comfortable furnishings and a respite lounge for parents. Additional amenities include private sleep alcoves, a kitchenette, shower facilities, Internet access and a family consultation room—all just steps away from patient rooms, physicians and staff.
